Breakthrough
Breakthrough is a song I wrote in 2018 with my friends singer/songwriter Zoser and rapper kidLIO. We had been asked by Arts Corps, a local arts organization, to write and perform an original song for their annual fundraiser. It was a strange writing process, for sure, since we all worked so differently and specialized in such different genres. We were helped out by singer/songwriter Daniel Pak, our mutual mentor figure, and later brought on local pianist Micheal Grant, guitarist Justus “J Blanco” White, rapper Aurelio Valdez, and singer Sarah “Lady Saigon” Nguyen for the performance. The show was a smashing sucess (and a whole lot of fun). Pak’s friend, local musian Stone Gossard, was so impressed with the song he asked us if we’d like to record it in his studio. Now THAT was a cool experience. I’d never gotten to record in such a beautiful space before. The song is a SoundCloud exclusive and I hope you enjoy it!
Lyrics
Oh, I'm drownin’
In the shallows
Heartbroken
Outspokenly uninspired
The water's rising
I'm in over my head
I'm sinking
Overthinking
And I'm so tired
But I know
That someday I'll come out of the deep end
I'll push through the tide
And onto the shore
And today
The rain comes down
But it won't wash away
All that I've been fighting for
I've had a breakthrough the tide
And I'm comin’ out of this war
Been waitin’ for too long
Long enough for this song
Screamin’ for help
But no one can hear me
In front of their eyes
But they can't see me
This pain is
Holdin’ me down
I'm about to drown
Cause there's no way out
But I'm breathin’ now
And I know
That someday I'll come out of the deep end
I'll push through the tide
And onto the shore
And today
The rain comes down
But it won't wash away
All that I've been fighting for
I've had a breakthrough the tide
And I'm comin’ out of this war
As the rain comes pouring all over my face
I mastered, navigated all of this unwanted space
Why do I feel rushed if it’s on my own pace
Battling my demons, today that won’t be the case
Overcome struggles. My experience is planted.
Couldn’t really stand it. Overly demanding.
I guess I’m still growing and that’s my understanding
My presence is passionate and I will never vanish
Take a deep breath
Put your chin up
And swim above the waves
Ain't hard to drown
When you know your soul startin’ to fade
To inhale you gotta take a breath
Pause
Keep on swimmin’ and never drown
No matter how hard
If you don't draw back
The world will attack
Will leave you half cracked
In a setback
When it's pitch black
Yo
Just as long as you got your heart
I promise you gon’ make it out the dark
But there are times
When the rain won't stop
And the skies are forever gray
When the water weighs me down
And I look around
And there's no sun today
When I'm stuck way out at sea
And there's no one coming for me
Well, I've seen Finding Nemo like a thousand times
So I'll just keep swimmin’ and I'll be fine
And I know
That someday I'll come out of the deep end
I'll push through the tide
And onto the shore
And today
The rain comes down
But it won't wash away
All that I've been fighting for
And I know
That someday I'll come out of the deep end
I'll push through the tide
And onto the shore
And today
The rain comes down
But it won't wash away
All that I've been fighting for
I've had a breakthrough the tide
And I'm comin’ out of this war
I've had a breakthrough the tide
And I'm comin’ out of this war
I've had a breakthrough the tide
And I'm comin’ out of this war
