Hypnic Jerk

Hypnic Jerk is a song I started writing it in a zoom songwriting class, after one day looking up "wtf is that weird falling feeling I get before I fall asleep???" You know, when you're just about to pass out and then you feel like you're falling into the void, about to eat it on a sidewalk. When I learned the technical term for that sensation is a hypnic jerk, I laughed, because it sounded like an insult to me. And it got me thinking about how when you like a jerk, you lose sleep over it, just like with actual hypnic jerks. Liking somebody who doesn’t respect your time and will never treat you the way you want to be treated is kind of like continually tripping and falling into the void. And so I likened the two experiences. Hypnic Jerk is a song about loving someone who is beautiful and charming and hypnotic and not at all worth the sleep your losing over them.
