How to Make Purple

How to Make Purple, the titular track off my sophomore album," is a love song to the first girl I ever had a crush on. I was six, it was at drawing day at theatre camp. I don’t remember her name or her face or really anything about her except her shoes, the only part of her I wasn’t nervous about being caught looking at. The song is about how in some ways I haven't really changed that much since then - I’m still unreasonably nervous and awkward around the people that I like and still just about as clueless as to how love and relationships work. It’s a song about being confused by your own feelings but still having a gut feeling that they matter. And, of course, the song is about my queerness. Purple, other than just being the color I was mixing on my pallet at the time, is the middle color of the bisexual pride flag, something I remembered only after writing the song. How fateful.
