Balcony Scene
There is an unspoken rule in being a good, progressive, nihilistic teen that you must be completely disillusioned with Romeo and Juliet. You must think it’s sappy and over the top and trite and boring and maybe even problematic. You have to say things like oh but that would never happen and real love doesn’t work like that and that isn’t healthy as if 1) you know anything and 2) being any of things is the point of Romeo and Juliet. Here’s my little secret: I love Romeo and Juliet. I don’t care if it’s overdone or any of the things I mentioned above - I think the poetry is gorgeous, the plot is captivating, and the characters are weirdly relatable. I have a song off my first album called Rosaline after the character from the play. So, Balcony Scene is my song saying, I don’t care if it’s sappy, I would like to, at some point in my life, have a beautiful, over-the-top romantic moment like the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet. I might proceed to poke holes into that want - and yet, regardless of whether this want is rational, it still exists and it is still worth expressing.
